HCA assists Bird Studies Canada in search for vanishing Swifts

In Canada Chimney Swift numbers have declined by 90% in the last 40 years. Designated federally and provincially as a Threatened Species, the search is on in Ontario for Chimney ChimneySwiftJuly2012-4Chimney Swift Photo by George PeckSwifts and nesting locations. HCA has joined the effort to seek out and protect habitat within our watershed. HCA has conducted surveys during 2012, and will continue to do so into 2013. HCA will notify the public when specific volunteer opportunities come up. In the meantime, Bird Studies Canada is seeking volunteers to help in the effort. For a complete report on the project, or for more information on the Chimney Swift, view the media release here.

HCA has discovered and preserved one nesting location at the site of the former Veldhuis greenhouses in Dundas. The reinforced chimney is the only structure remaining on the site. The property is undergoing ecological restoration and is one of the Hamilton Conservation Foundation's major ongoing fundraising projects.
